Description
Something strange is blowing in the wind:
we all sense it, but few among us can
capture it and put it into words. Dominika
Słowik, a rising star of contemporary
Polish literature, is particularly attuned
to the awesomeness and the terror of

the world that surrounds us. Through
her stories she has created a record of
the twilight of humanity’s unlimited
domination over the planet. Although
the plots of the stories are unrelated, they
combine to form a dark panorama of our
times, with the traces of decay visible at
each step: mold and rot eat away at bread,
at everyday objects, and fungal spores rise
through the air, though most people live
in total ignorance. The world described by
Słowik awakens a deep-seated fear within
us – likely because we see ourselves so
clearly in it.
“The Self-Sowers unsettles you and prompts
you to think about the world around you,
about other creatures that share our space,
about the climate. And about the fact that
we finally must give in”.
Adam Wajrak
“These are exercises in resignation, tales
of concessions and an attempt to imagine
a world in which humankind is not at all
the first priority. The allusions to Lem’s
Solaris and The Unvanquished only confirm
the universal message behind The Self‑Sowers:
rethink your relationship with
your environment”.
aciej Libich, Polityka
“In her uncanny tales, Dominika Słowik
sows a seed of anxiety, which then
gradually sprouts in the reader. The words
that best describe this collection are:
uncertainty, strangeness, anomaly,
isolation, but also co-dependence and
adaptation. In a conversation about her
stories, the author says: «We’re a bit afraid.
But not too much» (www.youtube.com).
Despite the deep-down anxiety we sense
while reading, Słowik’s tales are meant to
amuse and charm us with the abundance
of worlds she creates. The Self-Sowers
evokes not only unrest, but also delight”.
Natalia Zając, ArtPapier
