Tam, za kasztanami, jest świat. Paul Celan. Biografia

Anna Arno

JULIUSZ LITERARY PRIZE - SHORTLIST

Keynote
Paul Celan is one of the murkiest and most
mysterious poets of the twentieth century.
This book is more than a biography: it’s
a trek through Europe’s turbulent history
to the rhythm of mesmerizing poetry.
Selling Points
 Celan’s biography reads like a twisted
thriller with grand events of history
unfolding in the background.
 The story of one of the most significant
poets of the twentieth century, written
in lively, unpretentious language, free of
sterile academic discourse.
 The author focuses on the least known
and most interesting details – the affairs,
friendships, and conflicts that Celan and
other important figures of the day took
part in.
 A grand panorama of intellectual life in
twentieth-century Europe.
 Atragic story drawn from
the darkest cards of history: antisemitism,
persecution, and war.
 A new, original reading of Celan’s most
significant works.
 Rather than write a traditional
biography, the author tells the story
through non-linear events and slices of
daily life, creating a multifaceted portrait
of Celan the man, and not only the famous poet

Celan has captured the European
imagination for decades. Dubbed a “poet
at the extremity of speech”, he still
remains a largely obscure artist, his life
veiled by mystery and often darkness. His
life is a reflection of the twisted, tragic
fate of Europe in the twentieth century.
Born in Bukovina, he wandered around
the continent, eventually settling in
France, which became his second home.
There he published his books of poetry and
garnered international fame. There he met
his wife Gisèle de Lestrange, and there his
son Eric was born. And it was there, on
the night between April 19 and 20, 1970,
that he most likely threw himself into
the Seine from the Pont Mirabeau.
Arno’s book is not a typical biography.
She discards a traditional, linear narrative
in favor of a constellation of everyday
trifles and moments, thanks to which
we can view Celan from many angles.
Running in throughout the book are
Arno’s interpretations of his poems, which
gain new context and meaning through
her eye. In this way, Celan’s seemingly
inaccessible, radically introverted verse
actually encourages an authentic dialogue
with the poet.
Target Market
Readers of the classics of European poetry.
Fans of biographies, especially biographies
of artists.
People interested in twentieth-century
European history.
