Białowieża szeptem

Anna Kamińska

The town of Białowieża is situated in a clearing in the Białowieska Forest; it is a melting pot of cultures, inhabited by Poles and Belarussians, Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, and Jews. Outsiders who have fled the big cities come to this little “tourist town”, as do scientists and students fascinated by the diversity of life in the forest. In Białowieża a person might be a forest ranger, with a brother who is a scientist and an acquaintance who is an ecoterrorist. The mutual and often conflicting interests of the inhabitants and the arrivals create unique stories with a touch of the absurd. These go handinhand with tales of people who kept bears in their barns to protect them during the war, of the Nazis’ secret experiments on the European bison, or of a UFO sighted over the forest. The mood of a thriller, a fairy-tale forest, and mysterious family chronicles create a place full of human, historical, and natural oddities.
